Self-Driving in Switzerland: What’s Rolling in 2025?

Starting March 1, 2025, automated driving will officially be allowed on Swiss roads. But before we see fully autonomous vehicles cruising through the Alps, rigorous testing is still required. That’s why the Swiss Federal Roads Office (OFROU) has greenlit some exciting pilot projects.

Here’s what’s coming:

Robotaxis in Zurich’s Countryside

Imagine booking a self-driving taxi to take you to the nearest train station—sounds futuristic, right? Well, it’s happening! The Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) and the Canton of Zurich are launching a robotaxi service in the Furttal region. These autonomous vehicles will seamlessly connect passengers to the train network, enhancing public transport efficiency. Initially, a human operator will supervise the cars, but as the technology proves itself, full automation will take over. If successful, travelers will soon be able to summon a robotaxi via an app and ride into the future!

Autonomous Package Deliveries in Bern

Self-driving vans are coming to Bern! Logistics giant Planzer and Swiss startup Loxo have teamed up to revolutionise urban package delivery. Since fall 2024, an AI-powered van has been running routes between Planzer’s hub and 14 strategic drop-off points across the city. This pilot aims to master the “last mile” challenge, tackling busy streets filled with cyclists and pedestrians. Once the van reaches its destination, smaller electric vehicles take over for the final handoff. If all goes well, expect to see this tech expand to other Swiss cities soon!

Smart Minibuses in Schaffhausen

Public transport is getting an upgrade in Schaffhausen! After testing an autonomous bus route in 2019, the Swiss Transit Lab (STL) is taking things further with an advanced, AI-driven electric minibus. Running on Line 13, this Toyota-based vehicle is equipped with cutting-edge dual-mode technology—essentially, a regular minibus transformed into a self-driving marvel with sensors and AI software. It operates 24/7 in all weather conditions and offers free rides to passengers. The pilot runs until February 2025, paving the way for smarter, more flexible public transport.

Switzerland’s Road to Autonomy

Pilot projects like these are crucial for refining self-driving technology and understanding its real-world applications. The Swiss government is taking a careful but progressive approach, granting special permits for experiments that push the boundaries of innovation.

Who knows? In just a few years, hopping into an autonomous vehicle in Switzerland could be as normal as ordering a coffee.
